Davenport Ranch
Davenport Ranch is a prestigious community that began its development in the early 1980's. Prior to that time, this portion of Austin was a wild and beautiful place, populated mostly by ranch land, cattle, deer, coyotes and the occasional road runner. In 1979, construction began to connect north and south Austin via the Capital of Texas Hwy (locally known as Loop 360). To span Lake Austin, a beautiful untied, suspension bridge was created: our Pennybacker Bridge. Construction was completed in 1982 and what used to be an hour and half drive from north Austin to south Austin could be completed in less than 15 minutes.
Austin families were eager to take advantage of this beautiful piece of real estate with its vistas of rolling hills and breezes cooled by the waters of Lake Austin. The best land was already claimed by the prescient members of the Austin Country Club (then located off Riverside Drive in far south Austin) for their new Pete Dye-designed golf course and clubhouse but there was still plenty of land for those anxious to build. The first homes were completed in 1983 and I'm proud to say I was one of the original homeowners at Davenport Ranch having not only purchased one of the original Parade Homes but was actually married in that home on December 16, 1983. Over the course of the next 13 years of our residence in Davenport Ranch, we watched as they built not only spacious single family homes but also lovely garden homes along Long Champ Drive (Winners Circle and Steeplechase), waterfront condos (Marina Club condos), golf course condos (14th Fairway Condominiums), patio homes (Deer Creek), Davenport Rim and the luxurious homes along Churchill Downs. Building has continued through the years with not only new homes but also the construction of one of the highest ranked elementary schools in the Eanes ISD: Bridgepoint Elementary plus the long-desired and sought after retail center: Davenport Village. In this popular shopping hub, you'll find local restaurant favorites such as Maudie's Milagro, Uno's, Thistle Cafe, Dragon's Gate, CiCi's as well as others. There are also core retailers: dry cleaners, a locally-owned pharmacy, a fitness center, beauty salons and day spas, a bank and financial advisors, dentists and aestheticians.
Anchoring this community is the member-owned private golf course and club, Austin Country Club. Originally founded in 1899, Austin Country Club is one of the oldest existing clubs in Texas and home to one of the greatest golf instructors who ever lived, Harvey Penick. The Club consists of an 18-hole Pete Dye design golf course, 10 lighted tennis courts (two of which are clay surface), heated swimming pool, fitness facility, 57 boat slips and a large clubhouse. The clubhouse includes various dining areas, a large ballroom and meeting room facilities, as well as men's and ladies' locker rooms. This outstanding private country club is known for the quality of its membership and for service that exceeds expectations providing a tradition rich private country club experience for its members.
